According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has 36 square miles of land and 2,500 square feet of water. The Great Bayou Cane is an urbanized area commonly referred to by the locals as part of Houma, but it is a separate census - a designated place and is not included in the census of this city. There is also a small area on the east side of the Bayou, which is about 0.5 km ² in size.
The Houma marshland kept the area isolated until well into the 1930s, and could not inspire the Cajuns to become more Americanized. They persevered, however, and their surrounding communities were steeped in their culture and traditions, as well as the traditions of their ancestors.
While Houma is changing rapidly, many residents of surrounding communities continue to earn their living as in the past. Urban planner franchisees set their own times and work to provide valuable service to homeowners and local businesses throughout the region.
Synergy Bank is involved in over 100 local organizations throughout Bayou, and the BIG Achiever Award recognizes companies that are committed to growing and strengthening their local communities and communities in general. BayOU Industrial Group is a multi-billion dollar industrial company committed to the economic development of Houma and its neighbouring communities, as well as the local economy.
